Smiley LIVE! Hobo Jazz

Smiley LIVE! Presents: Hobo Jazz
Thursday, January 25, 6:30 PM
The Contemporary Club

This free public event is part of the Smiley LIVE! concert series. It’s family-friendly, with a Q&A segment where young and old alike can ask the performers questions about their music, their performance, and anything else they may be curious about.

Folk jive with an easy beat. Matt Coleman & Marquis Howell have been playing together for over twenty years & sound better than ever. From Matt’s powerful church-choir voice & impassioned songs to Marquis’ madman antics & slap happy bass, these guys entertain on many exciting levels.

Matt Coleman has come up through the decades as a gig hardened singer-songwriter with a bag full of world class songs & a full range of dynamics & tenderness. Playing mostly the Southern California region, he’s a local legend amongst those who know their stuff.

Marquis Howell is largely known these ears as an LA sideman for the best roots music & early jazz styles bands around. He plays with Jim Kweskin, Janet Klein, Dave Stuckey and many more in between time performing at Disneyland or Knotts Berry Farm or leading his own avant-garde swing band, Marquis & The Rhythm Howlers. His first band was Hobo Jazz tho & he’s always eager to get back to the musical trainyard.

Together these journeymen of acoustic tones bring forth the sounds of early jug bands, folk blues troubadours, & timeless songwriters. All with the quick tongued delivery that belies their stage experience.
